Skincare Tips I Wish I Would Have Known in My 20’s

What I Would Have Done Differently.

I spent my 20’s out in the sun without sunscreen. I washed my face with body wash. I never really put much thought into my skin. It wasn’t until my late 20’s that I began to have problems with my skin. As my 30’s approached, I quickly fell down the skincare rabbit hole.

Whenever people in their early 20’s ask me for advice on keeping my skin looking young, I always give them the same advice.

1. Wear sunscreen.

This is a nonnegotiable. The sun causes an insane amount of damage to your skin. Even if you work in an office, apply sunscreen before heading out for the day. That 20 min drive to work 5 days a week adds up quickly when it comes to your skin. I was recently at a spa and a lady was telling me about how much she wishes she had worn sunscreen just to drive to work. She explained that the left side of her face had so many more sunspots because of its constant exposure to the sun.

2. Hydrate.

Inside and outside. Drink water. It helps keep your skin hydrated which will keep it from showing wrinkles from dehydration. Use a moisturizer or cream. Find something that works with your skin and use that. Everyones skin is different. I like to keep it simple and use this. But again, what works for me might not work for you.

3. Don’t over exfoliate.

Quick story time. My skin was always pretty good. That was until my late 20’s and I started working in an office. The AC in my office just made my skin go insane. Suddenly my skin was really oily. I tried everything to reduce the oil. Lots of acids and exfoliating. My skin just kept getting worse. What I eventually learned was that I had dehydrated skin and that by stripping my skin of the oil it was just making my skin produce MORE oil. The solution was…you guessed it, hydrating.

Skin care is something that is highly personal. I recommend starting with something simple. A face wash, moisturizer and sunscreen. Once you find a basic routine that works for you then you can start adding serums and things.

So let me ask you, what skin care advice would you give your younger self?
